Eye Cream or Serum?

Clare Sharples

Is eye cream really necessary or will a serum do?

This is one issue that divides all Beauty Therapists!

Do I need an eye cream?

Will my serum and day/night cream work just as well.

The answer you all hate is it's different for everyone. Yes! It's true.

There is no one good time to start using eye cream. We all develop wrinkles and dehydration around our eyes at different times.

But what can you use in the eye area?

Firstly with most (most, not all!) cleansers, they can be used over the eye area.

Any cleansers that are exfoliating, or contain aha's or bha's cannot.

Cleansing the eye area enables you to remove sebum and makeup, which should always be the first step.

Secondly, eye cream. Eye creams and serums are developed differently from face creams. Eye creams are developed with very small molecules and fine texture so the delicate skin around the eye does not become flooded with product, resulting in puffy eyes.

Very often, serums are created with similar chemistry to ensure ingredients are absorbed efficiently in the skin.

So can they therefore be used in the eye area?

It depends upon the ingredients.

Retinol, aha's and bha's cannot.

Vitamin B, and peptides can.

Next time you're in the salon, ask me what is right for your skin - serum, eye cream or both!
